The museum, originally established as the Kew Bridge Steam Museum in 1975, is an independent institution that celebrates the history of steam-powered water pumping.

Located on the historic grounds of the former Kew Bridge Pumping Station in Brentford, which lies near the picturesque Kew Bridge on the River Thames in West London, the museum focuses on an impressive collection of stationary water pumping steam engines dating from 1820 to 1910. It proudly houses the world's largest collection of working Cornish engines, including the Grand Junction 90 inch, recognized as the largest engine of its type globally.
